This tour celebrates the country’s great organs in all their glory as the first ‘synthesisers’ invented centuries before their electronic counter-parts. Exceptional musicians The Necks and James McVinnie will reveal the extraordinary sonic possibilities of five incredible instruments including music by Philip Glass and Tom Jenkinson.
Each of The Necks’ improvised sets is “a thrilling, emotional journey into the unknown” (The Guardian) making every performance a unique and spellbinding experience. The tour celebrates the trio’s 30th anniversary and brings Chris Abrahams out from behind the piano to explore the powerful, intricate and varied acoustic possibilities of these magnificent organs and spaces.
Previously Assistant Organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, James McVinnie has become the country’s leading performer of new organ music. His boundless approach has included collaborations with world leading artists including Nico Muhly, Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Bryce Dessner (The National).
He will play a specially commissioned score by Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher / Warp Records) which intertwines the chaotic intricacy for which he is so well known with expansive classical influences, alongside two of Philip Glass’s most emblematic pieces rarely heard live on instruments of this scale.
